Balancing a relationship with a busy life isn’t easy – I know that from personal experience. Between running my own business, managing family life, and keeping on top of the house and garden, it can often feel like there’s little time left for anything else. If we’re both busy with work and other commitments, how do we make time for our partner and keep our connection strong?
The truth is, making a relationship last when you have a busy schedule isn’t impossible – it just takes a bit of effort and understanding from both sides. My husband and I have both had periods where work has taken over. Adding kids and house renovations into the mix can make finding time for each other rare, but we’ve managed to make it work over the years. Here’s how we’ve done it.
1. Find Your Own Space
When you’re both busy, it’s essential to have your own hobbies and interests. It can be easy to feel lonely when one person is deeply focused on work, but learning to find contentment in personal activities—whether it’s reading, gardening, or going for a walk—makes a big difference.
Relying solely on your partner for entertainment or connection can lead to feelings of neglect when their schedule gets hectic. Instead, having independent interests helps maintain balance and fulfilment, even when time together is limited.

3. Disconnect From Distractions
We’re all guilty of it – checking our phones when we’re supposed to be spending time together. But I’ve realised that when we do this, we’re not giving each other the attention we deserve. We’ve started making an effort to put our phones away during our “us” time – even if that’s just watching a film together.

Physical touch, even something as simple as a hug, can go a long way. We’re not overly sentimental in our relationship, but we do try to make sure we hug or hold hands every day, even when things are chaotic. It keeps the bond alive and helps remind each other that we’re still in this together.

If you can, plan something special now and then. Maybe go to a new restaurant or take a short weekend break. It’s all about making time for those you love, even when everything else is demanding your attention.
8. Show Appreciation
Finally, remember to show appreciation. Little things like thanking them for something they’ve done, or surprising them with their favourite treat, can make all the difference. It doesn’t have to be a big deal – sometimes it’s the small, thoughtful gestures that keep the love strong.
Relationships are a team effort. It’s not always easy, especially when you have a busy schedule, but with effort, communication, and support, it’s possible to keep things strong and make your relationship last.
