How can I stop my face from aging?

Growing old is a blessing and something none of us should ever regret.  A quote I always remember to appreciate growing older is ‘Do not regret growing older. It is a privilege denied to many.’

However, with that said, I may be about to contradict myself.

I will never regret growing older and I’m doing my best to lead a really healthy lifestyle that includes eating a plant-based diet and exercising five times per week.  I do this to try and increase my lifespan and avoid disease.

I am grateful to grow older and I hope to lead a long, healthy life.

But there’s one thing I hate about growing older.

The thing I hate is how I am aging.  And in particular, I hate the way my face is aging.

How can I stop my face from aging?

Ultimately, aging is natural and cannot be prevented.  It’s natural and a blessing to grow old, but there are some things we can do to prevent premature aging or even stop it in its tracks.  We are now able to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and even get rid of some signs of aging more permanently by visiting an anti-aging specialist for anti-wrinkle treatments.

In this blog post I will share lots of anti-aging skin tips to help improve your body confidence as you get older.

Natural ways to prevent the signs of aging

Before I dive into my suggestions to help combat the signs of aging, I want to make clear that I am not ANTI aging.  It’s a personal thing to me that I don’t like how my face is aging. I hope I can slow down the process or eat foods that will help to combat the signs or improve my skin.

I really hoped I would grow old with grace and appreciate every wrinkle, but they actually make me feel very self-conscious.  I believe each to their own and if you want to try and reduce the appearance of wrinkles to improve your self-esteem and confidence, then why not take advantage of all the knowledge on anti-aging available today.

If you are happy and confident with how you are aging then no need to do anything!  We should all do what makes us personally happy and confident.

On with the natural anti-aging tips!

Stop smoking

This is probably my biggest factor when it comes to my skin aging prematurely as I am an ex-smoker.  I smoked for ten years and I regret every single cigarette. Smoking cigarettes restricts blood flow which means the skin does not get enough oxygen and vital nutrients such as vitamin C.  This is terrible news for your skin which will begin to look dull and even yellowy. As the skin is not receiving nourishment it will begin to sag and wrinkle. There are numerous benefits to quitting smoking, but if you’re worried about getting wrinkles then let that be your motivation to quit.

Eat the right foods

It’s so important to get the right vitamins and minerals to our skin so it thrives.  Our skin is our body’s largest organ, though it’s easy to forget this. Eating a plant food diet rich in colourful fruits and veggies will help you to eat all the foods that are skin friendly.  Avoid refined sugar and other refined carbohydrates as these are linked to premature skin aging.

According to Healthline these are some of the best anti-aging foods we can eat:

  •         Watercress
  •         Red bell pepper
  •         Papaya
  •         Blueberries
  •         Broccoli
  •         Spinach
  •         Nuts
  •         Avocado
  •         Sweet potatoes
  •         Pomegranate seeds

Stop sunbathing

The sun is one of the worst culprits for premature aging.  Whilst we may feel more confident with a tan, it’s not good for keeping our skin healthy.  The sun is well-known for damaging skin, so if you want to keep your youthful looks then you need to cover up.  This goes for sunbeds too.

Exercise regularly

We should all be exercising regularly for its numerous benefits, but exercise might also slow cell aging.  There are studies that suggest regular exercise is linked to longevity. There’s also research that shows people in their 40s who exercise regularly have much healthier skin, comparable to skin of twenty or thirty year olds.

Wear sunglasses

Regularly squinting in the sun causes the eye muscles to constantly contract.  This repetitive movement will eventually lead to the squint lines staying, even when you’re not squinting.  Make sure you wear sunglasses on sunny and bright days to avoid squinting. If you need to squint in daylight then it’s a good sign you need your sunglasses on.  This will help to reduce the lines around your eyes and also protect your eyes from the harmful rays of the sun.

Avoid alcohol

There are so many reasons to avoid alcohol.  It’s a poison and has numerous negative consequences on our health, including our skin.  It dehydrates the skin and, over time, it will cause even more damage to the skin, including premature aging.  This is because alcohol is thought to deprive the skin of vitamins and minerals.

Manage your stress levels

Stress hormones are not good for our health and can cause aging:

“Research suggests that stress is associated with shorter telomere length. Telomeres are those little pieces of DNA on the ends of chromosomes, which effectively tell researchers how old a cell is.” – Vice

Get good quality sleep

You’ve guessed it – poor sleep can also cause aging!  I know I look way worse the next day when I’ve had a bad night’s sleep or an interrupted sleep, but a study has shown that partial sleep deprivation is linked to biological aging in older adults.  Sleep is needed for our bodies to regenerate and that includes our skin.

There are so many ways we can help ourselves to prevent the signs of aging through healthy lifestyle choices.

But what are the options once we start to see the signs of aging?

You can of course embrace the signs of aging by growing old gracefully, or you might want to look into the treatment options that are available.

Anti-wrinkle treatments to prevent the signs of aging

If you have wrinkles that greatly bother you, then you do have some options.  If your wrinkles are affecting your confidence then you might want to consider some non-invasive anti-wrinkle treatments such as Botox and/or fillers.  These treatments have fast results and can last for several months.

Botox can even prevent more wrinkles from forming or help you to stop any repetitive face movements you have that cause wrinkles, such as frowning when concentrating.

It’s important to do your research to decide if it’s the right choice for you and make an informed decision.  It’s also important to only have this treatment with a qualified medical professional.
