The Truth About Manifestation: Powerful Tool or New Age Scam?

In recent years, the concept of manifestation has exploded in popularity. Everywhere I turn, I seem to see something about manifesting—on social media, in self-help books, and even in casual conversations. It’s certainly sparked curiosity, not just for me but for many of my friends. Over the last two years in particular, it seems to have become a cultural phenomenon, promising to help people achieve their dream lives, reach their goals, and even “manifest” whatever they desire. But is it really that simple? Can you just imagine something and have it come true? Or is manifestation just a cleverly marketed con?

Here’s my take on manifestation, success, and why I think many people are being misled into believing it’s a quick fix for getting the life they want.

The Allure of Manifestation

Let’s face it: life is hard, and many people are searching for an easy solution. Manifestation sells the idea that by focusing your thoughts and imagination on what you want, you can somehow bring it into existence. That’s a tempting proposition. Who wouldn’t want an effortless path to their dreams?

I’ve read several self-help books, many of which heavily focus on manifestation as the cornerstone of success. I’ve even experimented with the practice myself. I kept a manifestation diary, jotting down my goals, ambitions, and things I was grateful for every day. While it felt productive at first, it quickly started to feel forced—fake, even. I couldn’t shake the guilt and discomfort of “asking the universe” for things as if I expected them to magically land in my lap. After a few months, I abandoned the diary and got back to what I know works for me: hard work, persistence, and taking actionable steps toward my goals.

Success Requires More Than Positive Thinking

In my experience, success doesn’t come from wishful thinking. I’ve built a successful self-employed business, working on my terms from home, since 2012. None of it came easily. It took years of dedication, learning, taking risks, and, yes, plenty of failures. I didn’t manifest my business; I made it happen through consistent effort and a refusal to give up.

That’s where I think manifestation falls short. It might serve as a motivational tool for some, helping them visualise their goals and feel inspired to take action. But that’s the key: you have to take action. Daydreaming alone won’t build a business, create opportunities, or lead to tangible success.

The Dark Side of the Manifestation Movement

What concerns me most is how manifestation is often sold as a solution to people who are vulnerable—those who desperately want to improve their lives but may lack the motivation or know-how to get started. They’re told that if they just “manifest properly,” they’ll get what they want. That’s simply not true.

Even the manifestation “gurus” themselves didn’t get to where they are by merely thinking positive thoughts. They worked hard to build their platforms, write books, and market their workshops. Ironically, the very success they promote as a result of manifestation is likely the result of good old-fashioned effort.

The Success Stories: More Than Meets the Eye

Some famous people credit manifestation for their achievements, which adds to its appeal. For example, Arnold Schwarzenegger has spoken about how he visualised his success as a bodybuilder, actor, and politician. But here’s the thing: Arnold didn’t just sit around imagining himself as a champion. He trained obsessively, worked tirelessly, and dedicated himself to his goals every single day. His success was the result of relentless effort, not magic.

Manifestation might have helped him stay focused on his dreams, but it was his work ethic and perseverance that got him there. That’s the part of the story that often gets overlooked.

My Honest Advice

If manifestation inspires you, great—use it as a tool to help clarify your goals and visualise where you want to go. But don’t stop there. The real key to success lies in taking action.

Here’s what I believe:

  • Get started: Stop talking about it or thinking about it and get on with it!
  • Stay consistent: Success often comes down to showing up, day after day, even when it’s hard.
  • Learn from failure: Use setbacks as lessons to refine your approach and keep moving forward.
  • Put in the work: There’s no substitute for time, effort, and dedication.

Manifestation might be a helpful starting point for some, but it’s not a substitute for action. As the famous Nike slogan goes: Just do it.

Can Manifestation Be Useful?

While I’m personally sceptical about manifestation as a “magic solution,” it’s worth acknowledging that some people find it genuinely useful—when approached in the right way. Manifestation can act as a motivational tool or a mental framework for achieving goals. Here are a few reasons why it might work for some:

1. Boosting Motivation and Clarity

Manifestation often involves visualising your goals and writing them down, which helps clarify what you want to achieve. This clarity can be powerful, giving you a sense of direction and a starting point for planning. When paired with action, it can motivate you to take the steps needed to reach your ambitions.

2. Encouraging a Positive Mindset

Focusing on positive outcomes rather than fears or obstacles can shift your mindset. A more optimistic outlook often makes people more resilient when they face setbacks, helping them stay on track.

3. Building Confidence

Imagining yourself succeeding can boost self-belief. For some, this confidence might make the difference between hesitating and taking decisive action toward their goals.

4. Supporting Self-Reflection

Practices like journaling, gratitude lists, or visualisation exercises encourage reflection. They can help you understand your values, desires, and priorities, which is a useful step in goal-setting and personal growth.

The Catch: Manifestation Alone Isn’t Enough

While these benefits sound appealing, they only work if paired with effort, persistence, and practical action. Sitting back and expecting success to fall into your lap just doesn’t happen. Manifestation is a starting point—it can help you imagine where you want to go, but only your actions will get you there.

For me, even though I gave manifestation a try, I found that my success already came from and continues to come from my work ethic, willingness to learn and adapt, and perseverance. However, I can see how manifestation might complement these traits for those who find value in visualising their goals.

By recognising both the benefits and the limitations of manifestation, you can decide if it’s a tool worth adding to your arsenal—but only if you’re willing to back it up with real effort.

Final Thoughts

Manifestation isn’t inherently bad, but it’s often marketed as an easy fix to life’s challenges, which it isn’t. Success takes hard work, resilience, and the courage to take risks. If you’re serious about achieving your goals, don’t get stuck in the trap of thinking about them endlessly. Use that energy to take action and make them happen.

And if you’re tempted to spend money on manifestation courses or workshops, ask yourself: Is this really going to help me, or am I being sold a dream or quick fix con? Because at the end of the day, the only person who can make your dreams a reality is you.
