A few tips to be more sustainable with your home energy

If you have been trying to save money on your energy around your home, and can see your bills increasing every year, chances are that you will need to make some changes.  Some smart and sustainable changes will help ensure that you are still able to enjoy the little luxuries in your life, but you can cut your bills at the same time.

Comparing different deals is always a good way of saving money short-term – for instance, depending on your circumstances, comparing packages for prepaid lights and prepaid energy meters with credit accounts can help you to weigh up your options.

However,, you can also make some other investments that will save money and potentially reduce non-renewable energy which is always best for the environment.  Read on to learn more.

Install a smart thermostat

Installing a smart thermostat is a good way of reducing your energy waste and preventing overheating your home. Wasting energy will cost you money, much more than a smart thermostat would.  We use the Hive thermostat which we can control remotely.  This means if we ever forget to turn the heating off when we leave the house, we no longer need to panic.  We can turn the heating off from our smartphones from wherever we are.  We never need to heat an empty house and waste energy.

Create your own renewable energy

You can save money by using renewable energy, too. While the initial investment will be high, you can get government funding to install solar or wind energy generation devices. You can benefit from the technology for decades to come, and the more energy you are using the sooner your investment will be returned. You might even end up selling electricity back to the local company, making an extra income for you and your family. For example, your solar panels could power your infrared saunas giving you the luxury feature you always wanted in your home, on a budget. Choosing renewable energy sources to power your home, no matter how much energy you use, is always best, but if you’re an energy guzzler then you should really take note.

Insulate your home properly

To reduce your energy waste around the house, you will also need to focus on your insulation. If you have single pane windows, or cracks and poorly insulated doors or walls, it might be time to have a chat with a green home expert to find out how much money you can save. Some countries have schemes to help people make their homes better at retaining energy.  In the UK you may be able to get a grant to help make your home more energy efficient.  Simply fill out the form here to see if you qualify: https://www.gov.uk/energy-grants-calculator

Look into heat pumps

Depending on where you live and the climate, you might be able to use a ground heat pump or an air heat pump.  These renewable energy technologies transfer the heat from the air or underground into useable energy for heating and hot water within the home, thus reducing your dependence on other energy sources and saving money in the long run.

Use natural light effectively

Of course you should make sure you replace your bulbs only with energy efficient bulbs, but it’s also a great idea to make use of natural light as much as possible.  If you find yourself reaching for the light switch in the middle of the day then perhaps it’s time to look at the layout of your room.  Try to take advantage of natural light by placing desks and seating near windows.  Natural light is free and of course energy saving.

Making your home more energy efficient and utilising renewable energy sources will ensure you are not wasting money and you’re also doing your bit for the environment at the same time.
