Should you try a CBD tincture?

CBD can be found in just about anything these days, from candies and cookies to beauty products. A study published in Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research in July 2018 found that the most common method of taking it was sublingually, which is how CBD tinctures are used.

If you haven’t tried a CBD tincture and are interested in finding out if it might be the best form of CBD for what you’d like to treat, here’s what you need to know before making your decision.

What is a CBD tincture?

A tincture is a liquid extract that’s produced by soaking a substance in another substance. In this case, the liquid used to soak the marijuana (generally a low-THC/high-CBD strain) and extract CBD is usually alcohol as it results in the best finished product.

“While the term “CBD tincture” is often used interchangeably with “CBD oil,” the two are actually different. Tinctures are made by soaking cannabis in alcohol, while oils are made by suspending CBD in a carrier oil, like olive or coconut oil.” – Healthline

Different types of alcohol may be used, like grain alcohol, vodka, or even brandy which can make for some unique flavours. You won’t feel a “buzz” from the alcohol, but you may notice a slight taste. While it doesn’t bother most, some find it off-putting and decide to use CBD oil or another form of the product instead.

CBD tinctures won’t get you high as the high-CBD/low-THC strain minimizes or eliminates the psychoactive effects while maximizing any medicinal benefits. For those with medical issues, it’s easy to take discreetly and won’t cause you to fail a drug test, yet it can be a lifesaver.

If you’re wondering whether CBD is legal in your US state, then check online for your country’s legal status guide. In the UK, CBD is legal if the THC content is 0.2% or below.

It’s absorbed faster, addressing pain and other issues quicker

Taking a substance sublingually, which means placing it under the tongue, provides the fastest and most efficient method of absorption. Therefore, when you take a CBD tincture, it will address the issue you are trying to treat quicker than other methods, making it particularly ideal for pain as you probably don’t want to have to endure it for any longer than you have to.

The compound dissolves and diffuses into the bloodstream through the tissues in your tongue which is why it’s faster than ingesting it orally. The International Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences found that peak blood levels of most products that are administered sublingually are achieved within 10 to 15 minutes, compared to an hour or more when ingested.

When you take a product by mouth, you’re forcing it to go through a long journey through the body, and the longer the journey, the less chance there is for it to be utilized in the bloodstream. If you take a CBD product and your body only ends up using a small percentage of it, it’s like throwing away cash. That means that CBD tinctures can allow you to make the most of the product so that your money goes farther.

The benefits

Of course, the medicinal benefits are the reason most people consider taking CBD no matter what form it’s in. When it comes to tinctures, you’ll enjoy the same benefits as you would taking CBD oil, edibles, and other products.

CBD is well known to reduce inflammation and relieve pain which is why it can be so effective for treating many different mental and physical issues.

It has unique effects on brain activity, often used to treat neurological disorders like OCD, PTSD, and anxiety.

Users often find relief for gastrointestinal problems, insomnia, stress, and much more.
