Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock recently, you should have heard the hype about CBD oil and its many health benefits.  There are still lots of misconceptions about CBD oil today with many people still believing it’s something to be wary of or that it’s linked to drug misuse.  CBD comes from the cannabis plant which is why many people instantly think it is something to avoid, but this couldn’t be further from the truth.

What is CBD oil?

CBD is short for cannabidiol which comes from the cannabis plant, otherwise known as marijuana.  The cannabis plant contains over 100 cannabinoids and CBD is just one of them.

THC is another cannabinoid that is found in cannabis plants and is the main psychoactive cannabinoid that can cause a high.  However, CBD does not have psychoactive properties.

In fact, CBD oil is a popular natural health remedy that has many positive health benefits.  It offers relief from those in chronic pain and many other symptoms can be eased too.  I will share some of the health benefits below, but there are many more.

CBD oil can have a lot of uses when it comes to our health.  For many it is found to relieve pain and acts as a remedy for several other health complaints from skin to mental health.

CBD is a cannabinoid that works with our bodies own endocannabinoid system.  This system runs through our entire body.  Its goal is to maintain homeostasis (internal balance).

You can purchase CBD oil as capsules, sweets or in a tincture with a dropper.  It’s readily available online and in health food stores.  The oil comes in different strengths such as 10% CBD Oil so you can find a strength that works best for you.  It can take some trial and error to discover which strength is best for you personally, so if a low strength is having no effect then try a slightly stronger one until you find the strength that works for you.

1.     Chronic pain

Studies have shown that CBD is effective in reducing pain.  They have been found to be “modestly effective in neuropathic pain and also for relieving pain in patients with malignant diseases.”   There are also studies that have found CBD is effective in relieving pain for arthritis and multiple sclerosis sufferers.

2.     Anxiety

CBD may be able to help those suffering with anxiety from generalised anxiety order (GAD) to social anxiety disorder (SAD) and even post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).  There needs to be more research, but it’s thought that CBD interacts with receptors in our central nervous system and may alter serotonin levels.  Serotonin levels can affect our mood and low levels can cause depression as well as anxiety.

As mentioned above, CBD may be able to alter serotonin levels to improve the symptoms of depression.

CBD can reduce inflammatory which is why it might be helpful in relieving pain and helping to treat some skin conditions such as acne.

CBD is now found in many skincare ranges as it’s said to be amazing for improving skin condition and promoting healthy skin.  A study found CBD to help improve the quality of life for those suffering with psoriasis as symptoms improved throughout the trial.

6.     Weight

Because of how CBD works in the body it’s thought it could even help with weight loss.  Our endocannabinoid system has two receptors called the CB1 and CB2 receptors that respond to CBD oil.  The CB1 receptors are usually only in the brain and the CB2 receptors are throughout our body.   People with obesity, however, have CB1 receptors throughout their body which means there could be a link between CB2 receptors and obesity.  CBD might be able to help our body control these receptors by blocking them off or activating them.

7.     Heart health

Some studies have shown CBD to help with heart health by lowering high blood pressure.  Its stress and anxiety reducing properties can also help to lower blood pressure.

8.     Gut health

Gut health is hugely important for our overall health inside and out.  CBD promotes the growth of good bacteria in our guts and can improve digestion.

Apparently the strongest scientific evidence for CBD oil is its use in relieving and preventing seizures in children suffering with epilepsy.  It helped to stop seizures in types of epilepsy that do not usually respond to anti-seizure medication.
