Minimising the toxins in your body

Unfortunately we are all exposed to toxins every day in our lives from what we eat, drink and breath.  Our environment is polluted and there is no escaping these toxins as hard as we might try, but we can minimise the toxins in our body by following a few tips.

The body has its own built-in detoxification system that works throughout the day trying to rid our bodies of harmful chemicals and poisons. However, it is essential to reduce the number of toxins in our bodies by ourselves because this detoxification system can also fail.  There are some toxins that stay in our bodies and never leave so if they accumulate they can be dangerous.

Whilst our bodies do their best to rid themselves of pollutants and toxins, it’s not a fool proof system and we can’t live exactly how we want whilst polluting our own bodies day after day.  For example, people that drink large amounts of alcohol can cause their liver to fail.

If you want your body to function naturally and to its fullest potential, you need to minimise the number of toxins your body is exposed to. This all starts with living a healthy lifestyle and making healthy life choices.

The following are just some tips you can follow to reduce the number of toxins your body is exposed to:

1. Stop substance abuse

Substance abuse and use is the leading cause of toxins in your body. If you smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol, it is high time to quit. You can receive alcohol treatment from a licensed professional to help you manage and cope with your withdrawal symptoms and stop the abuse of the drug. Addictions can come in other forms too – stimulants like caffeine also need to be cut down tremendously; if you are used to taking three cups of coffee a day, reduce to one and ultimately zero.

2. Drink a lot of fluids

One way you can get rid of the toxins in your body is by drinking a lot of fluids. The essential fluid that can help your body function is typically water. Try and drink at least eight glasses of water each day to keep hydrated and wash away toxins in your system. Avoid drinking water from plastic bottles because the toxins in the bottles enter your body as you drink as well as the plastic being harmful to the environment. Stay away from fluids that contain preservatives such as canned drinks.

3. Eat healthy and natural

Eat organic and natural foods that assist the liver in detoxification. Some of the foods that you should consume include plenty of organic fresh vegetables and fruits. Avoid eating junk and processed foods regularly. Such foods contain a high amount of preservatives and chemicals that are toxins to the body. They can also affect your overall health when they are consumed in large amounts. Ensure your diet is clean and natural 99% of the time. Remember, you are what you eat.  A quote I always try to remember when making food choices is ‘everything you put in your mouth is either fighting disease or causing it’.

4. Understand your medications

Medications can be toxic to your body because of the ingredients they contain. They can also be a problem if you are trying to detoxify. Always speak to your pharmacist or doctor about your medication and the toxins it contains. You can also ask for safe alternatives to the medications if there are any.  Perhaps a change to a healthier lifestyle by improving your diet and taking up exercise could be a way to reduce or come off your medication, depending on the ailment.  Discuss this with your practitioner and see if there’s a natural way you can begin to help yourself.

5. Reduce your stress levels

When you are stressed, the body releases cortisol, which is a stress hormone. In large amounts, this hormone can lead to poor health and other issues such as obesity, sleep issues, and high blood pressure. Ensure your stress levels are low to limit the amount of emotional and spiritual toxins that affect you. Find ways to relax such as meditation and yoga to reduce stress and become a calmer person.  Perhaps, like me, you might find you can work off your stress by exercising and thus improve your physical and mental health all at once.

Toxins in all their varieties are harmful to your health and can affect your well-being. It is vital to follow the guidelines above to ensure you lead a happy, healthy and normal life that is as toxin free as possible.
